Gudamakari Gorge is stretched on the southern slopes of Great Caucasus Mountains along Aragvi river and offers plenty of opportunities to explore and admire this lovely remote region of Georgia. This strategical region played an important role in medieval Georgian history and was part of the Duchy of Aragvi from 13th Century, controlling the vital road of North Caucasus, which later become the Georgian Military Road. Beside of strategical location, the region is famous for its’ religious, pagan shines and spiritual rituals. 

 

The Itinerary
Day 1: Tbilisi – Ananuri – Gamsi

Day 2: Gamsi – Chokhi – Dumatskho – Gamsi

Day 3: Gamsi – Tbilisi

 

The Program

 

Day 1: Tbilisi – Ananuri – Gamsi

  • In the morning meet the guide and drive to Ananuri Fortress Complex
  • Stop for lunch at local restaurant 
  • Check in to the local guest house in Gamsi
  • Dinner and overnight at Guest house

After breakfast meet your guide at hotel lobby and drive to small village Gamsi located in highlands of Georgia. The whole drive will take about 2 hours’ drive along Aragvi River. The first trop will be at Ananuri fortress (14-17 Century) – the main key point of Aragvi Saeristavo. the complex was built strategically in the valleys of two rivers (Aragvi and Verzatkhevi) protecting the whole area from enemies creating the natural gate for defenders. In history of Georgia Ananuri played an important role in numerous of wars. the complex includes several buildings: upper and lower castles, watch- towers, Churches, bell tower and water reservoirs. Nowadays it is overlooking on Zhinvali Dam – built in 1980s with capacity of 130 MW. During the construction the village Zhinvali was flooded. In winter when water level goes down you can see the 12th century church. After visiting Ananuri continue trip to village Gamsi. Here you will stay at family run small guesthouse “Ame” this charming guest house is owned by Luka Bekauri who is the beneficiary of USAID Resilient Communities Program, along with his siter Sopho had renovated their family house and are offering amazing hospitality. Here you will try local cosine and have a small rest. Then you will have horseback riding and explore surroundings of the village. The total length of pass (roundtrip) is about 8 km. and you will visit pagan shrines that are widely spread in mountainous regions of Georgia. After Christianity pagan characters became the part of fables and together created Georgian myths. Today you will see worship places of ADGILIS DEDA – a female pagan deity (after Christianity was morphed with the cult of Holy Mother Mary) protector of travelers and guest. Day 2: Gamsi – Chokhi – Dumatskho – Gamsi

  • Breakfast
  • Horseback riding to Village Chokhi and Dumatsko
  • Outdoor picnic lunch 
  • Dinner and overnight at Guesthouse

After breakfast you will have a horseback riding towards an ancient village Chokhi rich in history and culture and enjoy the stunning mountain views along Aragvi river. The total length of ride (round trip) is about 10 km. The village of Chokhi is a natural center of the upper part of Gudamakhari gorge, with breathtaking views of Mount Shirimi (3201 m) and the Boseli Valley. The first stop will be at memorial and museum of Goderdzi Chokheli – one of the most prominent Georgian writer, poet, director and screenwriter, who was born here. The museum offers a permanent exhibition of his personal personal belongings, photographs and letters. Like village Gamsi, this village also has a shrine of Pirimze angel – located at the head of the village, in a place constantly illuminated by the sun. another village that you will visit today is Dumatskho – one of the last villages in the gorge. Views of the entire Black Aragvi valley and the surrounding villages unfold from this place and you can enjoy and relax after having a picnic outdoor lunch in nature. Day 3: Gamsi – Tbilisi

  • Breakfast 
  • Drive back from Gamsi to Pasanauri and lunch at restaurant Chokhi
  • Arrival in Tbilisi, end of the tour

After breakfast and check out from the guesthouse drive back to Tbilisi. Enroute you will stop for lunch at restaurant Chokhi in Pasanauri. https://www.facebook.com/chokhi.pasanauri  Arrival in Tbilisi to your hotel, end of the tour.
